New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked the beginning of Pride Month by acknowledging the significant contributions of LGBTQ+ residents to the city’s rich history. In a post on X, Mamdani stated that honoring these contributions would require more than just the month of June.
Highlighting historical milestones, Mamdani referenced the Cercle Hermaphroditos, the first trans advocacy group in the United States founded in 1895, and the vibrant drag balls of the Harlem Renaissance. He also mentioned the pivotal Stonewall uprising and the Lesbian Herstory Archives, as well as ACT UP!, an organization founded in 1987 during the AIDS crisis.
“To all our queer and trans neighbors: you deserve a City where you can afford to live safely, openly, and joyfully. Happy Pride, New York City,” Mamdani added, emphasizing the city’s commitment to inclusivity and safety for all residents.
National Support for Pride Month
The Democratic National Committee also marked the occasion with a message on X, encouraging people to “Love openly. Live authentically.” Various Democratic leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and former Vice President Kamala Harris, expressed their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Pelosi celebrated the courage to live authentically, while Harris highlighted Pride as a celebration of joy and an ongoing fight for equality.
These statements underscore a broader national dialogue on the importance of recognizing and supporting the LGBTQ+ community, not just during Pride Month, but throughout the year.
