Austin Metro Sees New Traffic Signals and Seasonal Airport Route

The Austin metro area is gearing up for several transportation updates aimed at improving traffic flow and connectivity. Notably, the intersection of Chandler Road and CR 119 in Round Rock will see the addition of right-turn lanes and a new traffic signal. This project, approved by the City Council and contracted to Dan Williams Co., is funded by Type B sales tax revenue and will cost $841,808. The timeline for completion is yet to be determined.

In Leander, efforts to widen the area south of Creek Meadow Cove to RM 2243 are underway, with Phase 2 of the preliminary design completed. This $42.8 million project, funded by the Williamson County 2023 road bond, aims to enhance capacity and regional connectivity, with completion expected between 2027 and 2028.

Cedar Park is also set to benefit from improvements at the Parmer Lane and Ranch Trails Boulevard intersection. The project includes adding inbound and outbound turn lanes to facilitate future dual left-turn movements on southbound Parmer Lane. Although the design is complete, construction will resume once a nearby development begins, with an expected completion in winter 2026. This project is backed by the 2022 transportation bond and costs $1 million.

Airport Expansion

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is expanding its reach with a new seasonal route. Cayman Airways will offer a nonstop service between Austin and Owen Roberts International Airport in the Cayman Islands through August. This route, the airline’s only nonstop service from Texas, will operate on Sundays until August 16, using a Boeing 737-8 aircraft with 160 seats. Passengers will enjoy complimentary meals, free streaming inflight entertainment, and device charging at every seat.

Upcoming Closures

As part of the I-35 Capital Express South Project, the William Cannon Bridge will be closed from June 5 at 10 p.m. to June 8 at 5 a.m. for construction crews to set beams for elevated lanes. Lane reductions will also occur on the main lanes and frontage roads in both directions. Eastbound drivers on William Cannon Drive will need to use the I-35 frontage road or the U-turn at Slaughter Lane, while westbound drivers can access northbound I-35 via the frontage road or use the U-turn at Stassney Lane.

Completed Projects

In Bee Cave, a new traffic signal at Hwy. 71 and Uplands Ridge Drive is now operational, providing easier access to the H-E-B shopping center and The Uplands neighborhood. This project, funded by the Texas Department of Transportation, was completed in mid-May.
