NY Family Faces Loss of Caregiver Due to TPS Deadline

A New York family is bracing for a devastating loss as the deadline looms for Haitians on Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Sabine French, an immigration advocate and consultant, says her 91-year-old mother may lose the caregiver who has been vital to her daily life for the last three years.

Impact on Families

The work permits issued to hundreds of thousands of Haitians who have had TPS in the United States are set to expire soon, after a Supreme Court ruling last month upheld the Trump administration’s decision to end Haitians’ protections under the program. French’s mother, who lives in Queens, New York, and struggles with mobility issues and vision loss, is terrified of losing the help of her home care aide, a Haitian woman in her 60s who came to the US after the 2010 earthquake.

Finding a caring and responsible aide who could communicate with her Haitian-born mom in Creole has been a game-changer for their family, French says. The caregiver shops for her mother, does her laundry, ensures she takes her medication, and monitors her blood pressure. French says the possibility of losing a key part of their support system is devastating.

Call for Action

A temporary solution is Senate Bill 4814, which, if passed, will be a three-year extension of TPS. French believes a path to citizenship is the answer, whether it’s resetting the clock from scratch or creating a new pathway. She wants Americans to understand that TPS holders are not a burden, but rather taxpayers who work and contribute to society.
