A recent mid-stage study found that an experimental GLP-1 drug, combined with another experimental drug, significantly improved fatty liver disease in overweight or obese participants. The once-weekly combo drug, developed by D&D Pharmatech, showed signs of improvement as early as 12 weeks after starting treatment.
Study Findings
After 48 weeks of treatment, biopsies revealed that patients who received the new combo drug had more reductions in liver fat and improvements in liver damage compared to those who received a placebo. Notably, many of these benefits occurred before meaningful weight loss, suggesting that the GLP-1 drug provides direct therapeutic effects on the liver beyond weight reduction.
In a separate study, Japanese researchers discovered that pigment-producing cells in skin affected by vitiligo, an autoimmune condition that causes skin to lose its color, have not completely disappeared. Instead, these cells have entered a state where they lose their specialized functions, including pigment production.
