Cait Conley, a U.S. Army veteran, has emerged as the Democratic nominee in New York’s 17th Congressional District. She will face Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, a two-term incumbent and ally of President Donald Trump, in the November general election.
A Competitive Race
The Hudson Valley district is considered one of the most competitive congressional battlegrounds in the country. National parties and outside groups are expected to invest heavily in the race, which could help determine control of the U.S. House.
Conley defeated four Democratic rivals to secure the nomination. Lawler has previously criticized Conley over her connection to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, which occurred during her tenure on former President Joe Biden’s National Security Council.
The district spans portions of four counties on both sides of the Hudson River and contains a diverse electorate. The mix of affluent communities and less affluent areas has made the district one of the state’s most unpredictable political battlegrounds.
