North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has announced plans to significantly expand the country’s naval forces. Speaking at a commissioning ceremony for a new destroyer, Kim suggested that North Korea should build two large warships each year for the next five years.
Naval Expansion Plans
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim proposed building two warships comparable in size to the 5,000-ton Choe Hyon-class vessel each year. The destroyer, which was deployed at the port of Nampho, successfully completed military operational tests over the past 14 months.
Kim also mentioned that the navy’s nuclearization is advancing, contributing to the country’s nuclear deterrence. The naval buildup is seen as an effort to strengthen one of the weaker branches of North Korea’s military.
