Two nurses at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Florida were surprised to be inducted into the Tenet Healthcare Hall of Fame, an honor recognizing employees who go above and beyond for their patients. Melissa Brouillette, an ER nurse, and Marsha Powell, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurse, were both recognized for their selfless acts.
Compassion in Action
Powell, who has worked in the NICU for 22 years, was recognized for her compassion during a heartbreaking moment when she comforted a dying baby whose parents were not present. She held the baby, trying to comfort her, and told her it was okay to go. Brouillette’s recognition was for her efforts to help children affected by substance abuse and domestic violence. She and her husband have fostered about two dozen children, adopted four, and have four biological children.
Those kids were there along with both nurses’ families to witness the recognition, joining the community in celebrating the nurses’ contributions. The ceremony concluded with cheers and gratitude for the two women, who humbly said they were simply doing what they felt was right.
