Fairfax County – A group of elementary‑age volunteers with The Pawtectors, a Northern Virginia kids’ club, spent the weekend preparing and delivering blessings for animals housed at a Fairfax animal shelter. The effort coincides with World Animal Day on Sunday, Oct. 4, and the worldwide tradition of the Blessing of the Animals.
Kids lead the mission
Ten‑year‑old Amira (spelled Amara in the original interview) explained that she wanted to help the shelter’s newest residents find loving homes. “There was an animal shelter in Fairfax, and they just got some new animals, so I thought it would be nice to make some blessings for the animals and hope they get new homes,” she said.
Amira and several of her peers filled out certificates at home, then traveled to the shelter to drop them off. While there, they toured the facility and got the chance to pet the animals, an experience the children described as both fun and educational.
Building empathy and leadership
Debbie Henry, CEO and Chief Experience Officer of The Pawtectors, told WTOP that the organization’s “hands‑on kindness missions help build empathy, compassion, responsibility, and leadership.” This year, the club was selected as an official Ambassador for World Animal Day, a role that underscores its commitment to teaching children how to care for God’s creation.
Henry added that the group’s recent activity—delivering blessings to shelter animals—fits the club’s broader mission of encouraging kindness toward all living beings. “Our kids learn that caring for animals is an expression of love and stewardship,” she said.
Community impact
The shelter staff welcomed the children’s visit, noting that the blessings and the attention from young volunteers can lift morale for both staff and animals. “When kids show genuine concern, it reminds us why we do this work,” a shelter employee said.
Beyond the immediate act of blessing, The Pawtectors hope the initiative will inspire more families to consider adoption and support local animal‑welfare programs. The club plans to continue its outreach throughout the year, pairing educational activities with service projects that benefit the broader Fairfax community.
Looking ahead
World Animal Day will be observed on Oct. 4 with additional events at churches and community centers across the region. The Pawtectors intend to expand its ambassador program, inviting more schools to participate in future Blessing of the Animals ceremonies.
By involving children in compassionate service, the organization aims to nurture a generation that values kindness, responsibility, and faith‑guided stewardship of all creatures.
