Belvidere, Ill. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Northern Illinois Food Bank partnered with First United Methodist Church to host a large‑scale food giveaway that served about 200 families. The event, part of the Mobile Market Pantry program, allows local families to drive up to the church and select the items they need.
Growing need, growing response
Volunteer Greg Simross explained that the partnership began two years ago after volunteers noticed a rising need for reliable food assistance in the area. Since then, the Mobile Market Pantry has expanded, now operating four times a year to meet demand.
“This is great. We keep looking for ways we can serve the community, and this has proven to be a big draw, so hopefully we can do even more in the future,” Simross said. “Beautiful weather, served about 200 families worth of food. It was a great event.”
Event details
The giveaway ran on a sunny Wednesday, with volunteers from both the food bank and the church staffing tables, loading shelves, and helping families select fresh produce, pantry staples, and household items. By mid‑afternoon, the supply of donated food was exhausted, prompting organizers to close the event early.
Organizers emphasized that the rapid depletion of supplies reflects both the generosity of donors and the pressing need within the community. “We’re grateful for the outpouring of support from local businesses, farms, and individuals who contributed to the pantry,” said a spokesperson for the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
Looking ahead
Both organizations plan to continue the quarterly schedule, with hopes of expanding the program’s reach to additional neighborhoods in Boone County. They are also exploring partnerships with local schools and civic groups to increase awareness and participation.
Community members who missed this round are encouraged to watch for announcements about the next giveaway, which will be posted on the food bank’s website and the church’s social‑media channels.
