North Texans Honor Fallen Soldiers on Memorial Day 2026

Fort Worth City Council member and U.S. Marine veteran Charlie Lauersdorf shared his personal connection to the day, recalling the loss of over 42 men during his deployments. Meanwhile, hundreds participated in the Carry The Load event on Katy Trail in Dallas, marching to Reverchon Park with backpacks symbolizing the burdens borne by those who serve. Despite the rain, participants remained undeterred, demonstrating their commitment to honoring service members. The event, founded 15 years ago by Clint Bruce and Stephen Holley, aims to provide an active connection to the sacrifices made by military personnel.

Governor Abbott’s Tribute

Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed an audience in Sugarland near Houston, speaking about the Gold Star designation for families who have lost a loved one in combat. He emphasized the shared sacrifice of these families, who endure the challenges of military life alongside their service members. Abbott’s words highlighted the profound impact of military service on families, reinforcing the day’s theme of remembrance and gratitude.

Evening Concert and Fireworks

The day’s commemorations were set to conclude with a Memorial Day concert by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at Flag Pole Hill Park, followed by fireworks. In the event of rain, the concert would move to the Meyerson Symphony Center in downtown Dallas, ensuring that the community’s tribute to fallen heroes would continue regardless of the weather.
