Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – North Idaho College (NIC) celebrated a leadership transition this June as longtime provost Lloyd Duman stepped down after helping the school regain full accreditation. His successor, Gwen Cash‑James, brings a similarly unconventional educational journey and a commitment to serving the whole student and community.
From mill work to college leadership
Lloyd Duman, 69, grew up in southern Oregon, marrying young and working a series of blue‑collar jobs after high school, including at a mill, as a garbage collector and as a fence builder. He earned a teaching credential, taught English for a year, and then pursued a master’s in linguistics and literature at the University of Montana. In 1993, while road‑tripping home, Duman and his wife Jaime stopped in Coeur d’Alene, spotted a literature posting at NIC, and moved there that August.
Starting as an English instructor, Duman climbed the academic ladder, eventually serving as dean. He enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Antioch University in 2013, completing a dissertation on resilience thinking that later proved vital during NIC’s accreditation crisis.
Saving NIC from losing accreditation
In 2021, NIC faced a severe threat when President Rick MacLennan was dismissed and the board’s actions led the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities to place the college on “show‑cause” status – the step before loss of accreditation. Duman, who had planned to retire, was asked to stay on as interim provost. President Nick Swayne, hired in June 2022, described Duman as “the glue that kept things together.”
During the turmoil, Duman coordinated extensive paperwork for accreditors, organized campus visits, and worked closely with faculty to ensure compliance. Voter‑elected trustees later supported the effort, and NIC achieved full accreditation in the spring of 2024. With the mission accomplished, Duman retired in June 2025, saying, “I completed my mission, and that was my goal.”
Gwen Cash‑James brings a family‑first philosophy
Gwen Cash‑James, 58, also followed a non‑traditional path. After attending Whitworth University and several community colleges, an English class at Spokane Community College inspired her to become a professor. She earned a bachelor’s degree while raising three children, later completing a master’s and a doctorate in higher‑education administration.
Cash‑James taught and held leadership roles at Spokane Community College, Columbia Basin Community College, and Eastern Washington University before joining NIC this spring. She will be the first provost appointed outside of “crisis mode.” Her goal is to unite academic and student‑services divisions, creating a “whole‑person” environment for students and staff alike.
Looking ahead
Cash‑James highlighted NIC’s new “guarantee program,” launched this fall, which promises graduates a job or additional training within six months. She praised the staff’s openness to new ideas and emphasized a family‑first culture that extends to employees.
Both Duman and Cash‑James illustrate NIC’s tradition of hiring leaders who have navigated unconventional routes, reflecting the college’s mission to serve students who often take alternative pathways themselves.
