North Carolina Senate Race Tightens as Cooper Expands Lead Two Weeks Before Ballots

In North Carolina, absentee ballots will be mailed out this Friday, opening the nation’s longest 60‑day voting window. The timing comes as the race for the state’s U.S. Senate seat sharpens, with former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper pulling ahead of Republican challenger Michael Whatley in several fresh polls.

Recent polling shows growing Democratic lead

Three polls released within the past week all show Cooper in the lead. An Elon University poll of 800 likely voters conducted July 23‑31 gave Cooper 53% to Whatley’s 42% (margin of error ±5.6%). The Carolina Journal surveyed 600 likely voters Aug. 9‑10 and reported a 51.5%‑39% split (±4%). A Carolina Forward sample taken Aug. 3‑6 of 457 likely voters showed Cooper at 49% and Whatley at 42% (±3.5%).

Earlier polls from July also favored Cooper, though by narrower margins. A Change Research sample of 967 voters (July 29‑Aug. 1) gave Cooper 50% to Whatley’s 41%, and a Fox News poll of 1,005 registered voters (July 23‑27) showed a 53%‑44% advantage. The only outlier was a July 10‑11 poll of 759 voters that placed Cooper at 48% and Whatley at 44%; even that poll now appears less competitive as the election draws nearer.

Why the race matters

The North Carolina Senate seat is viewed as a pivotal battleground in the fight for control of the U.S. Senate. Republicans currently hold 53 seats nationwide, and the outcome in North Carolina could influence the balance of power. The state will also elect all 14 of its U.S. House members and the full 170‑member General Assembly.

Historically, Republicans have won every North Carolina Senate race since 2008, when the late Kay Hagan was defeated. Democrats have not captured a Senate seat in the state since 1998. Cooper, a career public servant since 1986, brings a record of statewide victories, including four attorney‑general races and two gubernatorial wins between 2000 and 2020.

Contrasting campaign themes

Cooper’s campaign is positioned against Whatley’s alignment with former President Donald Trump, who endorsed Whatley for the Republican National Committee chairmanship ahead of his 2024 presidential bid. Whatley’s platform emphasizes an “America First” agenda, strong national defense, border security, energy independence, school choice, and tax cuts across income levels.

At the North Carolina Democratic Party convention earlier this month, Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts addressed the gathering, representing the growing influence of Democratic Socialists within the party. Warren’s remarks highlighted policy proposals ranging from restructuring the Senate to expanding voting rights to all residents, regardless of citizenship.

What’s next for voters

North Carolinians will receive absentee ballots this Friday, beginning a 60‑day period to return them. Voters should verify their registration status, review sample ballots, and consider the candidates’ positions on issues that affect families, faith communities, and individual liberty. The upcoming weeks will likely see intensified campaign activity as both candidates seek to solidify support ahead of the November election.
