New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez is conducting a criminal investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and has been requesting unredacted files from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) since February. Despite his efforts, Torrez has not received a response, which he claims is hindering the state’s investigation.
Investigation and Request for Documents
Torrez sent a letter to the DOJ on June 30, stating that the federal government’s failure to release the documents is eroding the foundation for a potential prosecution in New Mexico. On Wednesday, Torrez addressed the possibility of suing the DOJ over the lack of cooperation, saying he is not ruling out a lawsuit and hopes to establish a cooperative dialogue with the federal agency.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico released 31 documents last month, but Torrez criticized the materials as unresponsive to his request. The documents included photocopies of news stories and correspondence from several years ago. Late Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office released a statement saying it is seeking dialogue with the New Mexico Department of Justice to reach an accommodation consistent with protective orders in place.
