Nine of ten Checkgate‑linked Republican candidates lose in Wyoming primary

Wyoming voters delivered a decisive rebuke on Tuesday, outing nine of the ten Republican candidates who had accepted campaign checks from donor Don Grasso during the 2026 legislative session. The defeats helped the Wyoming Freedom Caucus lose its grip on the House and see a setback in the Senate.

Checkgate controversy and the candidates

The controversy, dubbed “Checkgate,” began when Teton County activist Rebecca Bextel distributed $1,500 checks on the House floor after lawmakers adjourned on the first day of the session. Grasso later identified the ten Republican recipients: House Speaker Chip Neiman (Hulett), Representatives John Bear (Gillette), Marlene Brady (Green River), Gary Brown (Cheyenne), Chris Knapp (Gillette), Tony Locke (Casper), Darin McCann (Rock Springs), Joe Webb (Lyman), Senator Bob Ide (Casper) and former lawmaker Mark Jennings (Sheridan).

All but Rep. Chris Knapp were defeated in the primary. Knapp, who had not yet filed his campaign‑finance report at the time of reporting, did not respond to requests for comment.

Impact on the Freedom Caucus

The primary upset erased the Freedom Caucus’s control of the Wyoming House and reduced its influence in the Senate. Campaign mailers targeting the caucus highlighted the Checkgate scandal, portraying Bextel as a puppet master. The fallout also prompted legislative rule changes and an executive order from the governor.

Legal and investigative follow‑up

A special investigative committee concluded that Bextel’s distribution of checks did not violate the Wyoming Constitution or constitute legislative misconduct, but called the practice “undesirable and must never occur again.” The Laramie County Sheriff’s Office continues a criminal inquiry into the matter.

Several of the check recipients filed complaints against Democratic lawmakers who spoke publicly about the checks. Rep. Tony Locke lodged a complaint against Reps. Karlee Provenza (Laramie) and Mike Yin (Jackson), alleging they broke legislative rules. The complaint was ultimately dismissed.

Future political moves

In May, Bextel announced a run for governor as a Constitution Party candidate, contingent on Senator Eric Barlow winning the Republican nomination—a scenario that materialized.

The primary results underscore the importance of voter scrutiny of campaign practices and signal a shift in Wyoming’s legislative landscape as the Freedom Caucus grapples with its losses.
