The elevator at the Graduate Huntsville hotel opens onto a rooftop that catches most first-timers off guard. Topside sits eight stories above the MidCity District, and on a clear evening the view runs west past the Orion Amphitheater and out toward the ridge line. It is, straightforwardly, one of the better outdoor perches in the city.
Topside operates as the Graduate hotel’s rooftop bar, which in a lesser property might mean overpriced cocktails and an indifferent staff. Here the execution is tighter than that. The bar program leans into Alabama-adjacent spirits — local whiskeys, regional gins — without making a fuss about it. The bourbon selection is solid without being exhausting, and the bartenders tend to know what’s on the shelf rather than just gesturing vaguely at the back wall.
The drink most worth ordering is whatever the seasonal cocktail is at the time of the visit. The kitchen keeps the menu rotating, and previous iterations have included a smoked honey Old Fashioned and a watermelon shrub number that was sharper than it sounded. House draft beers run around six to eight dollars, and craft cocktails land in the twelve-to-fifteen range — standard for a hotel bar in a mid-sized city, maybe a dollar or two over what you’d pay at a ground-level spot. Beer and snacks for two people usually comes in well under fifty dollars before tip.
The food menu is small and meant to accompany drinks rather than replace dinner. Wings, a charcuterie situation, some fried things. Nothing complicated. The kitchen closes earlier than the bar, which is worth knowing if the plan involves eating.
The rooftop has two distinct zones: a covered bar area with stools and high tops, and an uncovered deck that runs along the south and west edges. The deck chairs fill up fast on weekend evenings from about five o’clock onward. Weeknight visits, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday, offer a noticeably calmer experience — easier to get a spot at the rail, easier to have a conversation. Summer heat on the uncovered deck can be punishing in July and August before sundown; the same space in October is genuinely excellent.
Parking in MidCity is handled in the adjacent garage off Zierdt Road. Validation is available through the hotel for the first couple of hours. The district itself — with Half Baked Cookie Co., Tortugas, and several other tenants — means there are reasonable options before or after for food if Topside’s kitchen doesn’t fit the need.
Topside doesn’t try to be the loudest room in Huntsville. The music volume stays at a level where conversations don’t require leaning in. The lighting after dark is warm without going dim. It draws a mix: hotel guests from out of town, couples celebrating something, groups of coworkers on a Thursday. The crowd tends to be older than what fills the amphitheater parking lot on concert nights, which contributes to the relative calm.
It isn’t a destination bar in the sense that people drive across the state for it. But for an honest rooftop drink with a view that actually delivers, Topside earns the visit most evenings it’s open.
