During October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Ada County Victim Services Center announced a notable increase in calls for assistance with domestic violence and sexual assault. Executive Director Trina Allen attributes the rise to both population growth in the Treasure Valley and greater community awareness of abuse.
Comprehensive Services for Survivors
Allen emphasized that Boise and the surrounding Ada County remain family‑friendly places, yet abuse still occurs daily. The center coordinates with local partners to provide confidential medical examinations, counseling, and legal support. Patients often first seek help in emergency departments, where exams are conducted privately and survivors are linked to the center’s resources.
Saint Alphonsus regional chief nursing officer Lauren Smith highlighted the emotional toll on survivors, noting that many feel sad, angry and scared. Smith, a former forensic nurse examiner, praised the expansion of services that now include a dedicated team of ten specially trained registered nurses who performed 165 forensic exams over the past year.
Legal Assistance and Workshops
The Victim Services Center offers free filing workshops twice a month, allowing individuals leaving unsafe situations to obtain civil attorney support without an appointment. A separate case orientation program educates victims about available resources and what to expect throughout the court process.
Allen stressed that the center’s 24‑hour, free services aim to ensure no survivor “slips through the cracks.” She encouraged anyone seeking help to remember they are not alone and that the center is ready to assist at any stage of the journey.
Community Collaboration
October also marks the 25th anniversary of the Ada County Community Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner team, a partnership between St. Luke’s and Saint Alphonsus. The collaboration underscores the community’s commitment to providing timely, compassionate care for survivors and their families.
For more information or immediate assistance, the Ada County Victim Services Center can be reached at 208‑577‑4400 or visited at 417 S. 6th St. in Boise. Services are available around the clock and at no cost to callers.
