NFL owners approve $9.6 billion sale of Seattle Seahawks to Vinod Khosla family

In a unanimous vote at a special owners meeting in Atlanta, the National Football League approved the sale of the Seattle Seahawks to the Khosla family, led by venture‑capital pioneer Vinod Khosla. The transaction, valued at $9.612 billion, was first announced on July 11 and became official after the league’s approval on Wednesday.

Commissioner Goodell praises timing

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell congratulated the new owners, noting the “great timing” of acquiring a franchise that had just captured its second Super Bowl title in franchise history. Goodell said, “It’s not very often you can buy a Super Bowl championship team, but you’ve done that. Many of our members struggle to find ways to get in the Super Bowl and win a trophy, and you’ll be walking into your new building shortly with a fresh, shiny trophy there for you.”

Khosla family’s background and obligations

Vinod Khosla thanked the late Paul Allen’s sister, Jody Allen, and the Allen Trust for trusting the family with the franchise. He emphasized how rare it is to purchase a team that is already performing at the highest level, calling the opportunity a “gift” from the Trust.

The Khosla family will have to divest its minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers, which they acquired in 2025 when Khosla purchased a 3.1 % ownership share. Goodell highlighted that the family’s experience with the 49ers made the transaction more attractive to other owners, noting their familiarity with the NFC West and the passion of NFL fans.

Community focus and family involvement

Khosla expressed admiration for Seattle’s fan base, known as the “12s,” and pledged to deepen community engagement. He and his wife, Neeru, said their son Neal, a devoted football fan, helped spark the family’s interest in buying the team. Their daughter Nina also attended the owners’ meeting.

Vinod Khosla, originally from India, shared that his love for football began with the Pittsburgh Steelers after moving to the United States in 1976. He remains a Steelers fan while also following the 49ers and, now, the Seahawks.

What the sale means for Seattle

With the Khosla family at the helm, Seattle fans can expect continuity in the team’s competitive trajectory and potentially new investments in stadium amenities and local outreach. The sale also underscores the growing financial value of NFL franchises, as the Seahawks’ price tag ranks among the most expensive sports‑team transactions in history.
