The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) is fighting against the Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting requirements, which the organization believes is an invasive and unconstitutional federal mandate. Beth Milito, Vice President and Executive Director of NFIB’s Small Business Legal Center, recently discussed the issue on Viewpoint Alabama, a local radio show.
BOI Reporting Requirements
The BOI reporting requirements would force small businesses to provide personal information, including names, dates of birth, addresses, and identification documents, to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). This information would be stored in a federal database, which the NFIB believes is vulnerable to privacy violations and data breaches.
The NFIB has launched a campaign to repeal the law that established the BOI mandate and is urging Congress to take action. The organization is also calling on the Treasury Department to destroy all BOI data that has already been submitted by small businesses.
The NFIB’s efforts have already led to a temporary block on the BOI mandate, thanks to the intervention of the White House. However, the organization believes that a permanent repeal is necessary to protect the privacy and security of small business owners.
