Newport Acquires Properties for $3.8M Redevelopment

The city of Newport has announced a $3.8 million acquisition of properties, including the former Brass Ass and Brass Bull buildings, aimed at redeveloping the site.

Redevelopment Plans

The city is buying nine lots on Monmouth Street, which will be designated for mixed use within the Central Business District and is part of the Monmouth Street National Historic District.

According to Mayor Tom Guidugli Jr., this acquisition is an exciting step forward for Newport, allowing the city to close a long-standing reinvestment gap and shape a future for the block that reflects the energy and character of the city.

The city also aims to improve public safety, as the properties have been the site of numerous police calls since 2021, including fights, assaults, and reports of shots fired.

Next Steps

The agreements transfer the trade names Brass Ass, Brass Bull, Brass Mule, and Huddles to the purchaser to prevent their use in future business operations.

City Manager John Hayden stated that this acquisition allows Newport to take a proactive approach to public safety and quality of life, guiding the properties toward safer and more productive uses.
