Newark Liberty International Airport has unveiled a new surface movement radar to improve runway safety. The radar will help air traffic controllers track runways in all weather conditions.
Improved Safety
The federal government says the new radar will prevent potential collisions and improve safety for the American traveling public. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said, “It allows controllers to see on the screens where everything is at, airplanes, vehicles, and it keeps the American traveling public safer.”
The new radar is part of a $12.5 billion modernization project, which includes the rollout of high-tech flight management software. The updates are meant to help air traffic controllers, not replace them.
National Impact
Newark becomes the fifth airport in the nation to install the new technology. More surface movement radars are being installed within the next year at the country’s main airports, including LaGuardia and JFK.
