New Zealand Confirms No Talks with EU on Associate Membership Amid Trump’s Tariff Warning

WELLINGTON — New Zealand’s foreign ministry made it clear on Friday that the country has not entered into any discussions with the European Union about becoming an associate member. The statement came after the EU announced it was considering a similar partnership for Canada.

Official denial

“There have been no discussions with the EU about New Zealand becoming an associate member,” a spokesperson for Foreign Minister Winston Peters told Reuters. The clarification was issued in response to speculation sparked by recent EU comments about expanding its network of close partners.

EU’s broader partnership push

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday that the bloc wants to open the door for Canada to become the EU’s first associate member, describing the move as a way to forge new links among allies in “an openly hostile world.” European Parliament President Roberta Metsola added on Thursday that Australia and New Zealand could also follow Canada in deepening ties with the EU, noting that “we’ve already seen it, both in terms of legislation that we pass, where we see partners from across the world, Australia, New Zealand being some examples of saying, look, we want to deepen our relationship.”

Trump’s response

President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly warned the EU against any steps that could undermine American trade interests, called the Canada proposal “laughable” and threatened to impose tariffs if the bloc moved forward. The President’s stance reflects a broader commitment to protecting U.S. businesses and ensuring that trade arrangements do not disadvantage American workers.

Australian perspective

Australia’s Trade Minister Don Farrell said on Tuesday that his country is “on the same page” with Canada’s attempt to seek deeper ties with the EU, indicating a regional appetite for stronger links with Europe.

Implications for New Zealand

While New Zealand has not yet entered formal talks, the country remains a close ally of both the United States and the EU. Wellington’s clear denial suggests a cautious approach, ensuring that any future engagement aligns with New Zealand’s national interests and existing trade relationships.

What’s next?

Observers will watch how the EU proceeds with Canada’s associate‑member bid and whether Australia or New Zealand decide to pursue similar arrangements. For now, New Zealand’s government emphasizes that no negotiations are underway, keeping the door open for future dialogue that respects the nation’s sovereignty and economic priorities.
