New Sumatran tiger cubs arrive at Attica Zoo, boosting global conservation effort

Attica Zoological Park in Spata, Greece, welcomed three two‑month‑old Sumatran tiger cubs into its care on Tuesday. The cubs, born in early July to mother Toba and father Argos, received identification microchips and their first vaccinations, a key milestone in the global effort to create a safety net for the critically endangered species.

Why the cubs matter

The Sumatran tiger, the smallest of the world’s tiger species, is classified as critically endangered, with as few as 400 individuals believed to remain in the wild on Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. Habitat loss from aggressive forest clearing has driven the species to the brink of extinction, placing it alongside the South China tiger and the Malayan tiger in the highest risk category.

“The Sumatran tiger is one of the most threatened tiger species in the world, and among felines in general,” said Theodoros Babilis, head keeper of cats and monkeys at Attica Zoo. “Zoos in Europe and elsewhere are maintaining a safety population so that in the future there can be potential reintroductions of this species into the wild.”

Details of the cubs and their care

The three cubs—two males and one female—are already showing the sharp claws and teeth typical of their species, making handling a delicate task. Veterinary staff, led by Dr. Arsenoi Psaroudaki, a zoo and wildlife veterinarian, used electric buggies to ferry the animals between carriers during the vaccination process, working quickly to limit stress.

“The tigers don’t like to be handled. They’re very wild,” Dr. Psaroudaki explained. “It’s very humbling to be able to work with the rarest tiger species in the world.” The cubs received a vaccine similar to the one commonly given to domestic cats, protecting them against three major diseases, and were logged in a shared microchip database that tracks the global safety population.

Looking ahead

Attica Zoo plans to name the cubs after characters from Homer’s “The Odyssey,” reflecting the park’s Greek heritage. While their father Argos has since died of cancer, the cubs represent a hopeful sign that coordinated international breeding programs can preserve the species for future generations.

Conservationists view the birth and immediate care of these cubs as a tangible step toward safeguarding a species on the edge of disappearance, underscoring the importance of zoo‑based programs in the broader fight against wildlife extinction.
