The New Mexico women’s basketball team began summer practice with first-year coach Amy Eagan, a new-look roster, and a focus on building culture and consistency.
Building a New Foundation
Eagan said the energy was strong during the opening session but emphasized the importance of sustaining that effort throughout the summer. “This summer is going to be a lot about our culture,” Eagan said. “Who we are, how we approach things.”
The Lobos are undergoing a significant transition, with several new players joining the program. Eagan said players already familiar with her system, along with returning members of last year’s team, will help lay the foundation.
“Our identity, we’re going to play hard. We’re going to play fast. We’re going to compete. We’re going to be tough,” Eagan said.
Senior guard Gracy Wernli, who previously played for Eagan, is among those helping lead the adjustment. “I know their system. I know the drills, I know the people that I’m working with right now,” Wernli said.
Wernli said she is focused on encouraging and guiding younger players as the team comes together. She added that the group is already showing signs of strong chemistry. “All the girls are super sweet,” Wernli said. “The coaches really respect us as people rather than just as players, so just a family community.”
As summer workouts continue, Eagan said the program is focused on honoring New Mexico’s tradition while establishing its own identity heading into the upcoming season.
