New Mexico Senate Poll Shows Ben Ray Luján With Strong Lead Over Larry Marker

Albuquerque, NM – A new poll conducted by the Albuquerque Journal reveals that incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján enjoys a sizable lead over Republican challenger Larry Marker in the race for New Mexico’s Senate seat. The survey shows Luján at 53% support, Marker at 38%, and 9% of respondents undecided.

Poll Details and Local Perspective

The poll, released on September 1, 2026, surveyed likely voters across the state. KOAT political analyst Brian Sanderoff described the race as a classic “David vs. Goliath” matchup, noting Luján’s long‑standing presence in New Mexico politics compared with Marker’s relative anonymity among average voters.

“Ben Ray Luján has been active in New Mexico politics for decades,” Sanderoff said. “Whereas his opponent, Larry Marker, he’s not known among the average New Mexico voter. So, what we have here is sort of like a David vs. Goliath.”

Secretary of State Contest

The same poll also examined the statewide race for secretary of state. Democratic candidate Amanda Lopez Askin leads Republican Ramona Goolsby, 47% to 35%, with 17% of voters still undecided. Sanderoff added that many voters lack detailed knowledge of these offices, often defaulting to party preference on Election Day.

“These are very powerful positions, but the average voter doesn’t know much about them. What happens on election day is oftentimes the average voter will go back to their political party of their preference,” he explained.

Implications for Voters

With Election Day set for Tuesday, Nov. 3, the poll underscores the importance of voter outreach, especially among the undecided segment. Both campaigns are expected to intensify their ground operations and media messaging in the coming weeks to sway the remaining voters.

For New Mexicans, the Senate race carries significant weight, as the state’s senior senator will play a role in shaping national policy on issues ranging from energy development to border security—topics that directly affect families and communities across the state.

What Voters Should Know

  • Voting locations and deadlines: Early voting begins Oct. 15, with absentee ballot requests due by Oct. 20.
  • Key issues: Candidates have highlighted economic growth, water resource management, and protecting constitutional freedoms.
  • How to stay informed: Local news outlets, candidate forums, and the New Mexico Secretary of State’s website provide up‑to‑date information.

As the campaign season enters its final stretch, New Mexicans are encouraged to review the candidates’ platforms, verify their polling locations, and participate in the democratic process.
