New Mexico sees rise in international visitors while U.S. tourism declines

New Mexico is defying the national trend of declining overseas travel. According to the 2025 Economic Impact report from Tourism Economics, the state attracted about 760,000 international travelers last year, a growth of roughly 1.1 % compared with 2024.

Growth amid a national downturn

While the United States as a whole experienced a 5.5 % drop in international visitor arrivals, New Mexico added 10,000 more overseas guests, showing that the state’s tourism strategy is resonating with foreign travelers. The increase may reflect the state’s continued emphasis on outdoor recreation, cultural heritage, and distinctive cuisine, which remain top priorities for visitors.

Economic benefits for the state

Overall tourism continued to thrive in New Mexico, with total visitor arrivals reaching 41.6 million in 2025. Those travelers generated an estimated $8.8 billion in direct spending, supporting jobs across hospitality, retail, and recreation sectors. The report highlights that spending on food and beverage, retail, and outdoor recreation grew between 2024 and 2025, underscoring the lasting appeal of New Mexico’s natural landscapes and culinary offerings.

What the numbers mean for local communities

Higher international visitation translates into more revenue for small‑town businesses, from boutique hotels in Santa Fe to family‑run restaurants in Albuquerque. The influx of foreign tourists also helps diversify the state’s economy, reducing reliance on any single market segment.

Looking ahead

Tourism officials remain optimistic that the upward trajectory will continue as the state promotes its unique attractions and invests in infrastructure that enhances the visitor experience. Continued growth in international arrivals could further bolster New Mexico’s economic resilience, especially as other regions grapple with the lingering effects of the pandemic on travel.

For travelers seeking a blend of cultural richness, outdoor adventure, and warm hospitality, New Mexico’s recent performance offers a compelling reason to explore the Land of Enchantment.
