Multiple lakes in New Mexico have closed their boat ramps due to historically low water levels and ongoing water management operations. The main boat ramp at Elephant Butte Lake has been closed as the lake sits at 1.4% capacity. Receding water levels have created hazards that make traditional boat launching unsafe.
State park officials say the park remains open for boating, camping, shoreline recreation, paddling, and hiking. Low water levels and scheduled water releases have impacted boating access to the following lakes: Heron Lake State Park, Santa Rosa Lake State Park, El Vado Lake State Park, and Clayton Lake & Dinosaur Trackways State Park.
New Mexico State Parks stresses that a closed boat ramp does not mean that the park itself is closed, as many opportunities for recreation remain available.
