A law passed in 2024 stripped the governor of making special appointments for senators, defaulting the decision to a special election. However, the Kentucky constitution’s language on the matter is ambiguous, and it’s unclear whether the rule governs Senate vacancies specifically.
Beshear has been publicly demanding more transparency from McConnell, calling for videos and even writing him letters. Beshear’s latest letter to McConnell said he is prepared to challenge how to fill his seat should it be vacated early for any reason.
McConnell, 84, has been out of commission since he was hospitalized on June 14 in Washington D.C. His team said he suffered a fall. Despite two photos provided by his office, he has not been publicly seen, leading to speculation about his health and whether he’ll be able to finish his term.
