New Mexico issues smoke advisory as Frijoles Fire burns 12,000 acres

New Mexico officials announced a smoke advisory on Saturday for residents in the path of the rapidly expanding Frijoles Fire. The wildfire, now over 12,000 acres in size, continues to burn in the northern part of the state, prompting the New Mexico Environmental Department and other agencies to coordinate a public‑health response.

What the advisory means for families

The advisory asks people to keep windows and doors closed, create a “clean room” in their homes, and avoid activities that add pollutants to indoor air. Residents are told not to burn candles or incense, refrain from using strong scented air fresheners, and to avoid smoking or vaping indoors. By limiting the amount of outdoor air that enters the home, families can reduce exposure to smoke particles that can irritate the lungs and exacerbate respiratory conditions.

How to assess outdoor conditions

In addition to monitoring the Air Quality Index (AQI), the state recommends the “5‑3‑1 visibility method” as a quick way to decide whether it is safe to spend time outside. The method suggests that if you can see less than five miles, the visibility is reduced; if you can see less than three miles, outdoor activities should be limited; and if visibility drops below one mile, staying indoors is strongly advised.

Health considerations

Smoke from large wildfires contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that can penetrate deep into the lungs. People with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, or other respiratory sensitivities are especially vulnerable. The advisory encourages those individuals, as well as pregnant women and older adults, to follow the precautions closely and to seek medical attention if they experience worsening symptoms.

What officials are doing

The New Mexico Department of Environment and the state’s emergency management team are monitoring fire behavior and air‑quality data around the clock. They will update the advisory as conditions change and will lift it when smoke levels return to safe thresholds. Residents can find the latest information on the state’s official website or through local news outlets.

Community response

Local churches, schools, and community centers have begun distributing masks and offering indoor spaces for those who need a clean environment. Parents are being asked to keep children indoors during school hours and to limit outdoor play until the smoke clears. The collaborative effort underscores the importance of community solidarity during environmental emergencies.

While the fire continues to threaten unburned land, the primary concern for officials right now is protecting public health. By following the advisory’s recommendations, residents can help safeguard themselves and their families until the flames are contained.
