New Mexico Democrats Vote For Lieutenant Governor

The New Mexico Democratic State Central Committee is in the process of selecting a new lieutenant governor nominee after Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver suspended her campaign due to health concerns. Four candidates are contending for the position: New Mexico Commissioner of Public Lands Stephanie Garcia Richard, New Mexico State Senator Harold Pope, Geoffrey Luehring, and Toni Pinedo.

Nomination Process

The Democratic Party State Central Committee has until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, to select a nominee. The winner will appear on the general election ballot on November 3, 2026. According to KOAT political expert Brian Sanderoff, if no candidate receives a majority of the Central Committee votes, a point system will be used to calculate the winner.

The candidates met virtually with the SCC on Saturday, July 25, 2026, to make their cases for the nomination. The winner will join former U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland on the ticket for the 2026 general election.
