New Mexico could move its presidential primary up by four months

The Democratic National Committee has approved a proposal to move New Mexico’s presidential primary forward by almost four months, positioning the state as one of the earliest contests in the nation’s nomination process. The shift would place the primary in February, ahead of many traditional early‑state contests, but the change cannot take effect until the state legislature enacts the necessary law.

Why the timing matters

Political analyst Brian Sanderoff of KOAT explained that early primary states wield outsized influence because they attract national attention and campaign resources. “Early states in a presidential primary are very important because it’s in those states that candidates gain a lot of attention,” he said. Sanderoff noted that New Mexico’s diverse electorate, including sizable Native American and Hispanic populations, makes it an attractive early‑voting venue for the Democratic Party.

Potential benefits and concerns

Supporters argue that an earlier primary could increase civic engagement, drawing presidential candidates to the state and prompting more media coverage of local issues. “The presidential candidates will come to New Mexico. They’ll learn about our issues. They’ll advertise a lot on television to try to persuade the voters,” Sanderoff said.

Opponents, however, raise fiscal and logistical worries. The Legislative Finance Committee estimates that moving the primary could cost the state about $15 million. Paul Gessing, president of the Rio Grande Foundation, expressed concern that New Mexico taxpayers should not bear that expense. “I understand the desire to move forward our primary to make New Mexico’s votes more relevant in the national election. I get it — that’s totally understandable,” Gessing said, “but I don’t think we, the people of New Mexico at large, should be on the hook for a $15 million bill.”

Another issue is the split between the February presidential primary and the June primaries for other state offices. With historically low voter turnout in off‑cycle elections, a divided primary calendar could depress participation in the later contests.

Legislative path forward

The proposal now heads to the New Mexico Legislature, where lawmakers will debate the amendment. If approved, the change could be enacted before the next election cycle, though a special legislative session might be required to meet the accelerated timeline. Sanderoff said it remains unclear whether the Republican Party will follow the Democrats in moving its primary earlier.

What residents should watch for

New Mexico voters should monitor legislative hearings and any upcoming special sessions that could affect the primary schedule. The outcome will shape how candidates campaign in the state and could influence the broader national nomination process.
