Osage Beach, Mo. – Starting in November, the Lake Regional Cancer Center will offer patients a cutting‑edge linear accelerator, a machine that delivers highly focused radiation to treat cancer. While the technology itself is widely used, the upgraded features of this unit represent a significant step forward for local health care.
Precision that protects healthy tissue
Radiation oncologist Reed Cope explained that the new accelerator can target tumors with millimeter‑level accuracy and rotate a full 360 degrees during treatment. “That can include some really small tumors, especially those close to critical organs,” Cope said. “Having the confidence to treat those tumors without damaging nearby organs is a big step for us.”
Patient‑focused design
The treatment table is also engineered for precision. It can tilt and rotate, allowing clinicians to align the radiation beam even when a patient is favoring one side due to pain. Cope noted that the table is built for accuracy rather than comfort, but the trade‑off saves minutes per session. “Taking off a couple of minutes of each treatment is a big benefit to the patient,” he said. “We can treat 30‑40 patients a day, and each session is a little shorter, which is a big advantage.”
Local access reduces hardship
For many families in the Ozarks, traveling to larger metropolitan centers for radiation therapy has been a logistical and financial hardship. Cope emphasized that offering daily treatments close to home helps patients stay on their healing journey without long trips. “It’s huge for the community,” he added.
Open house invitation
The center will host an open house on Thursday, November 5, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at 54 Hospital Drive. Attendees can meet the care team, see the new machine, and learn how the technology works.
What this means for Osage Beach
By bringing advanced radiation therapy to the heart of Osage Beach, the Lake Regional Cancer Center not only improves clinical outcomes but also strengthens the local health‑care infrastructure. Residents can expect faster treatment times, reduced travel costs, and the peace of mind that comes from receiving world‑class care in their own community.
