The Peace Center will host the national tour of the Dirty Dancing musical from November 10 through 15, bringing Greenville a fresh Broadway‑style take on the classic 1987 film. While the production keeps iconic moments like the famous lift and the line “Nobody puts Baby in a corner,” it adds new choreography and a larger role for Vivian Pressman, played by Greenville‑born actress Sarah Ellis.
Local talent shines
Ellis, who grew up in Platteville, Wisconsin, spent many summers in Greenville visiting her grandparents. Her grandfather, Dan A. Ellis, served for years as Furman University’s band director, and her brother, Daniel Ellis, is principal oboist with the South Carolina Philharmonic and a frequent guest with the Greenville Symphony. During her Greenville engagement, Ellis plans to visit Furman and see the practice field named for her grandfather.
“I love going to work every day,” Ellis said of the tour. “I love this cast, this show and our enthusiastic audiences.” She added that the live experience offers something special in an age of constant online distraction. Citing neuroscientists’ concept of “collective effervescence,” Ellis noted that audiences putting their phones down to share a moment together is especially valuable today.
What to expect
The musical is set at a Catskills resort in the summer of 1963 and follows Frances “Baby” Houseman, a young woman who discovers independence and love while falling for charismatic dance instructor Johnny Castle. A new, extended musical number gives Ellis’s Vivian character a chance to showcase comic timing and vocal talent, adding fresh energy to the familiar story.
One of the show’s standout scenes occurs early in the second act when Baby walks through the resort grounds after a night with Johnny. As she passes, ordinary workers break into dance, turning an everyday setting into a vibrant expression of her newfound love.
Tickets and details
Tickets range from $71.50 to $137.50 and can be purchased by calling 864‑467‑3000 or visiting peacecenter.org. The production will head to Broadway in February, with the entire touring cast—including Ellis—making the move. For 21 of the 27 performers, Greenville marks their Broadway debut.
The show offers Greenville residents a chance to enjoy a high‑energy, family‑friendly performance that blends nostalgia with new theatrical flair, reinforcing the city’s growing reputation as a hub for live arts.
