New Jersey Governor Addresses Tensions at Immigrant Detention Center

In Newark, New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill has addressed rising tensions surrounding the Delaney Hall immigrant detention center, attributing much of the unrest to out-of-state agitators. At a recent news conference, Sherrill noted that five of the six individuals arrested during a protest were not New Jersey residents, suggesting that ‘national extremist groups’ have contributed to the heightened tensions.

Focus on Peaceful Advocacy

Governor Sherrill emphasized the importance of maintaining peaceful protests to advocate for improved conditions for detainees. ‘We can’t let what’s happening outside Delaney Hall take us away from that mission,’ she stated, expressing gratitude to the majority of protesters who have demonstrated peacefully.

The Delaney Hall facility, operated by Geo Group for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), has been the site of protests following detainees’ labor and hunger strikes over alleged inhumane conditions. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has denied these allegations, supporting the state police’s involvement as a measure for ‘law and order.’

Concerns Over Federal Actions

Governor Sherrill criticized federal actions, including the use of batons by ICE agents, as inappropriate for crowd control and potentially exacerbating tensions. She has called for the closure of Delaney Hall and aims to prevent any escalation that might justify increased federal intervention.

New Jersey state police have established ‘protected protest zones’ to facilitate peaceful assembly. However, confrontations have occurred, with some protesters reportedly using face coverings and projectiles, leading to police using riot shields and tear gas to disperse crowds.

Sherrill urged protesters to lower the temperature of demonstrations to focus on the well-being of detainees and their families. ‘Today and going forward, I urge those protesting outside of Delaney Hall to bring the temperature down,’ she said.
