North Tuscaloosa will soon welcome a new dining destination as the former Heritage House coffee shop makes way for Ammalia Ristorante, an Italian restaurant and steakhouse. The project, announced on Monday, is being spearheaded by Ronnie Gashi, who operates five Italian eateries across Mississippi.
Local entrepreneurs bring Southern Italian flavor
Gashi told the Tuscaloosa Thread that the group plans to open Ammalia Ristorante on Rice Mine Road sometime in January or February of next year. While details remain under wraps, he indicated the menu will focus on Southern Italian cuisine blended with a steakhouse concept, featuring Mediterranean-style dishes prepared with extra‑virgin olive oil.
From lease hunting to property purchase
The building was purchased outright after a two‑year search for a suitable lease space. Commercial real‑estate agent Neal DiChiara, who announced the deal, said the buyers shifted from leasing to buying when the right property emerged, noting that the location, building, and potential aligned perfectly with their vision.
Gashi’s regional restaurant experience
Gashi and his cousin Florian Imeri run a family of Italian restaurants in Oxford, Tupelo, Brandon, Clinton and Columbus, Mississippi. Each venue shares a common culinary DNA while bearing its own name—”Amore” in Oxford and Brandon, “Roma” in Clinton, “Casa D’Italia” in Tupelo, and “Amata” in Columbus. Imeri serves as executive chef across the group.
Heritage House closes, but remains elsewhere
Heritage House Coffee & Tea closed its North River location in mid‑December after announcing the decision on social media. The company expressed gratitude to patrons for years of support. Heritage House continues to operate its Riverfront location on Jack Warner Parkway in downtown Tuscaloosa and its Town Center shop off McFarland Boulevard in north Tuscaloosa, both offering full kitchen service.
What locals can expect
When the project moves forward, Gashi said the partners will share more details about the concept. Residents can look forward to a menu that highlights the lighter, olive‑oil‑rich dishes of Southern Italy, complemented by a steakhouse offering, adding a new dining option to the North Tuscaloosa corridor.
