The New Haven Police Department has announced the promotions of Lt. Brian McDermott and Sgt. Chris Alvarado to the ranks of captain and lieutenant, respectively. The promotions were approved by the police commissioners during a meeting on Tuesday.
Leadership Skills Praised
Both officers were praised for their leadership skills by the commissioners. Police Chief David Zannelli put forward the recommendation for McDermott’s promotion, citing his experience and knowledge. McDermott will become the department’s fourth captain, taking over as patrol commander from Capt. Nicholas Marcucio.
Alvarado’s promotion was also unanimously approved by the commissioners. He will be replacing McDermott as deputy patrol commander. The promotions are part of a larger shuffling of high-ranking police officers in the department.
Other changes include the assignment of Capt. Brendan Borer as the officer in charge of the Professional Standards and Training division, and the move of Lt. Derek Werner to the Police Academy commander position. Asst. Chief Manmeet Bhagtana will also be moving to the Investigations/Administration chief position.
