New Haven is losing two key directors: Shannon McCue, the budget director, and Tirzah Kemp, the Community Resilience director. Both are leaving for new job opportunities, according to Mayor Justin Elicker.
Departures and New Opportunities
Kemp, who was appointed in February 2024, will become the executive director of a nonprofit, although she cannot disclose the name at this time. She expressed her love for the work at City Hall and her commitment to the community. McCue, who was appointed in August 2024, cited personal reasons, including a long commute, for her decision to leave.
Mayor Elicker described McCue as an incredibly hard worker and a joy to work with. He also praised Kemp for her hard work in supporting the city’s challenges, such as homelessness. The city will work to hire replacements for the vacant positions, with Deputy Director of Policy, Management, and Grants Ron Gizzi filling in for McCue in the meantime.
The Community Services Administration will also feel the impact of these departures, as Homelessness Services Coordinator Velma George retired earlier this year, and Food Policy Director Latha Swamy was fired over alleged misuse of a city credit card. Mayor Elicker acknowledged the challenge of losing staff members but expressed happiness for their new opportunities.
