The city of New Haven is working to make the Barnard Nature Center a safer place for birds. The center, located in West River Memorial Park, has large windows that can be hazardous for birds, which often see their reflection and think they are flying into a tree.

Bird-Friendly Solution

To address this issue, the city is installing bird-safety decals on the windows of the nature center. The decals, which feature white dots, will help alert birds to the presence of glass and prevent collisions. The Menunkatuck Audubon Society, a local bird conservation group, is partnering with the city on the project.

The decals, which cost $2,653, will be installed on the center’s 720 square feet of window area. The installation is expected to be completed by the end of the summer, with the help of volunteers.

This initiative is part of the city’s larger effort to revitalize West River Memorial Park as a hub for environmental education and urban wildlife preservation. The park is home to a variety of bird species, and the city is taking steps to protect and conserve them.
