Destiny Jones, a longtime community member, attended the latest “Family Fun Day” in the Hill, organized by the city’s Youth & Recreation Department. The free event featured tables from the New Haven Police and Fire Departments, nonprofits, and free food for families.
Community Connection
The event, which began after the Covid-19 pandemic, aims to bring City Hall outside and mix it with fun. City Deputy Director of Youth Services Ronald Huggins said the mobile festival has four more stops this summer.
For some parents, the event meant more than just a free meal and a bounce house. Thomas Howard, a single father, said it was a low-pressure way to spend time with his kids. Monate Miller, a working mother, brought her daughters to get them out of social media and spend quality time together.
Other families echoed the sense of connection, with Danasia Jones attending with a group spanning three generations. Clari Sanchez, who moved to New Haven from the Dominican Republic, said events like this help her kids connect with American culture.
