The City Gallery in New Haven is currently featuring an exhibit called Sea Glass, which showcases local artists’ interpretations of water. The exhibit features paintings, sculptures, and fiber arts that explore the theme of water and its many forms.
Local Artists Featured
Kathy Kane’s pair of paintings, Tidal Rush and Shimmer, are among the pieces on display. Kane’s energetic brushstrokes convey a sense of constant motion, but the lack of scale leaves the viewer wondering about the size and significance of the waves. Rita Hannafin’s work uses a mix of dyes, stitches, and frays to connect with the viewer, while Roberta Friedman’s encaustics depict changing surfaces and murkier depths.
Sheila Kaczmarek’s Remembering David is the only piece in the show to depict a recognizable human figure. The ambiguity of its neighbors makes it easier to connect with the piece’s complex possibilities, leaving the viewer to ponder the meaning and significance of the artwork.
