New Haven Deploys Red‑Light and Speed Cameras to Boost Road Safety

New Haven is taking concrete steps to protect its streets. Beginning this week, the city will install seven red‑light cameras at key intersections and a speed camera opposite Hillhouse High School. The program is designed to deter red‑light runners and speeders, safeguarding families, schools, and neighborhoods.

How the system works

According to city officials, the cameras activate only when a vehicle runs a red light or exceeds the speed limit by ten miles per hour. They capture a photo and short video of the violation, which is then reviewed by city staff before any citation is issued. “Someone is in fact reviewing it before the citations are issued, and that someone is internal because it’s the City of New Haven’s program,” explained Haley Simpson, director of transportation, traffic, and parking.

Enforcement timeline and penalties

The city’s warning period ends on October 15. After that date, tickets will be mailed to violators. The first offense carries a $50 fine, with each subsequent offense increasing to $75. Mayor Justin Elicker emphasized that the fines are modest but effective tools for encouraging safer driving habits.

Privacy safeguards

Simpson stressed that the cameras do not record continuously; they capture footage only when a violation occurs. Access to the recordings is limited to city employees, ensuring that the system respects residents’ privacy while still providing a reliable enforcement mechanism.

Addressing community concerns

Some residents have expressed worries about constant surveillance, citing the controversial Flock cameras used elsewhere in the state. Both Mayor Elicker and New Haven Police Chief David Zannelli clarified that the city does not employ Flock technology. The red‑light and speed cameras are operated by a separate vendor, Novoa Global, and are distinct from the police’s own license‑plate‑reading equipment.

“We’ve got too many challenges in New Haven, and we’re not going to pause programs that have clear benefits in keeping our community safe,” Elicker said. The administration believes that the safety gains outweigh the concerns, especially given the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce traffic‑related injuries and fatalities.

Looking ahead

The current rollout is just the beginning. City officials indicated that additional cameras may be added at other high‑traffic locations in the coming months, further expanding the program’s reach. By targeting dangerous driving behaviors at their source, New Haven hopes to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.

Local businesses and parents have welcomed the initiative, noting that fewer traffic violations can lead to smoother commutes and a more welcoming atmosphere for shoppers and families. As the program takes effect, the city will monitor its impact and adjust enforcement strategies as needed to ensure the best outcomes for the community.
