New Haven Adult Ed Grads Celebrate

Dynasty Whitfield, a New Haven native, was one of 151 students to graduate from the New Haven Adult & Continuing Education Center last Wednesday. Whitfield, who lives with musculoskeletal pain and fibromyalgia, had previously struggled in traditional high school settings before finding success at Adult Ed.

Overcoming Obstacles

Whitfield recalled shedding tears of joy during the commencement ceremony, saying she was proud of herself for persevering through challenges. She had tried other educational paths, including the district’s Gateway to College program, but found that Adult Ed’s individualized approach and supportive staff made all the difference.

Adult Ed Principal Michelle Bonora praised the graduates for their resilience and accomplishments, noting that many had overcome significant obstacles such as housing instability, homelessness, and trauma. Bonora also announced plans for Adult Ed to move into a new building in 2027, which will feature expanded programs and resources, including a culinary and hospitality program and a health suite.

Whitfield, who hopes to pursue a career in cybersecurity or open a soul food restaurant, credited Adult Ed with providing her a supportive community and helping her achieve her goals. She said, ‘It’s more than just getting your education. It’s a really good support system that never thought to look at me any less than just because I was failing. It felt like we were family more than a school.’
