A new chatbot, NewsGuard AI, is being launched to provide users with reliable news sources and to compensate publishers for their content. The chatbot aggregates information from sources that have been rated as reliable by NewsGuard, a startup that rates the reliability of news sources.
How it Works
NewsGuard AI’s responses include citations and links to news outlets, and the chatbot promises to share revenue with publishers through a 50-50 revenue share model. The product is being pitched as a way to solve several problems at once, including the spread of misinformation and the lack of compensation for publishers.
NewsGuard co-CEO Steven Brill said that the company is trying to line up with publishers instead of lining up in court against them. The company has informed major news outlets of its approach in advance, and only two sources have opted out of the program.
Marketing Partners
NewsGuard is lining up marketing partners, including magazines and independent bookstores, to help spur usage of the chatbot. The company is also offering introductory access for free, with users able to pay $6 per month to access the chatbot.
The launch of NewsGuard AI comes as the use of AI chatbots for news is becoming more popular. According to a survey published by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, about 10% of consumers use AI chatbots for news on a weekly basis, up from 7% one year earlier.
