Netflix revives “A Different World” to inspire a new generation of college students

Los Angeles – Netflix is launching a sequel to the iconic sitcom “A Different World,” a show that helped countless viewers choose colleges, careers and even relationships. The new 10‑episode series premieres on September 24 and returns to the fictional Hillman College, now portrayed on real historically Black campuses such as Clark Atlanta, Spelman and Morehouse.

Original cast reflects on lasting impact

Actor Kadeem Hardison, who played the brilliant Dwayne Wayne, says he still hears stories of fans who pursued engineering, attended college or found confidence because of the original series. “I’m learning that every day still,” Hardison told the press, emphasizing the show’s role in shaping lives.

New talent brings fresh perspective

Among the six young leads, Cornell Young IV, a former Missouri college‑football player, admits his own college decision was driven by recruitment offers. Filming on HBCU campuses made him reconsider his path, saying, “I wish I would have been more like, ‘Yo, here’s my tape. I’m trying to come here.’” Young portrays Shaquille Johnson, the son of original character Ron Johnson.

Maleah Joi Moon plays Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, beginning her freshman year at Hillman. Moon stresses that Deborah must stand on her own, reflecting the experience of a young Black woman today rather than merely copying her parents.

Creator’s personal mission

Showrunner Felicia Pride grew up watching the original with her family and recalls recording a step‑show episode on a VCR to learn the dance. “That changed something in me, being able to see myself on screen,” she said. Pride hopes the sequel will give today’s students the same sense of recognition and purpose.

The series tackles modern challenges: social‑media pressure, digital isolation, immigration, campus safety, sexual orientation and sexual health. Pride notes that technology can both connect and disconnect young people, a tension the show will explore.

Balancing legacy and innovation

While honoring the original, the new cast aims to make Hillman relevant to their generation. Reece, who plays Hazel Henry, points to the constant comparison fostered by social media, especially for young women. Alijah Kai, as Rashida Duvall, highlights increased freedom for Black women to define their own style, from hair to fashion.

Hardison cautions against treating the sequel as a direct remake, likening the comparison to Michael Jordan versus LeBron James – different eras, different circumstances. He adds, “Let the kids cook,” urging viewers to give the new series a chance to develop its own identity.

High stakes in a crowded streaming market

The original ran six seasons with more than 20 episodes per season, allowing characters to evolve over time. The new series must capture attention quickly with only ten episodes, a challenge in today’s fast‑paced streaming environment. Pride acknowledges the pressure: “We have to do well out the gate. The times that we’re in are much more unforgiving.”

She hopes families will watch together, reinforcing the show’s core values of faith, family and personal responsibility while offering a relatable portrait of modern college life.
