Netanyahu Rejects Trump’s Gaza Plan

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected US President Donald Trump’s latest plan for Gaza, citing security concerns. The plan, announced by Trump last month, aimed to advance the stalled ceasefire in the region by having Hamas gradually give up its weapons while Israeli forces halt their attacks and begin withdrawing from Gaza.

Netanyahu’s Stance

Netanyahu stated that Israel will not withdraw from any of the territory it controls until Hamas has been completely disarmed. This stance has been welcomed by Netanyahu’s far-right allies, who are crucial to his ability to form a government after the upcoming elections.

The Israeli military has eased off on its strikes on Gaza, which have killed over 1,250 people since the ceasefire came into effect. The authority for carrying out strikes has been limited to the army’s chief of staff, apparently in a quiet gesture toward Trump’s ceasefire efforts.

Trump’s Efforts

Trump’s plan grew out of his October ceasefire deal, which ended major Israeli military operations in Gaza and brought about the release of all remaining hostages. However, the deal has largely stalled, and Trump is under pressure to deliver on his promise of being a global peacemaker as talks with Iran stall and gas prices remain elevated ahead of US congressional elections in November.

Netanyahu’s rejection of the plan risks angering Trump, who has been a strong supporter of Israel. However, Netanyahu’s dependence on Trump is significant, and voters may punish him if he is seen as mismanaging the key relationship.
