Early Beginnings

Hopkins’ love for music began at a young age, and he started playing the piano when he was just four years old. He began composing years later, writing his first piece, a waltz, in 1960 at the age of 22.

Hopkins has had his fair share of experience in composing music, having scored for several films, including ‘Shadowlands’, ‘August’, ‘Slipstream’, and ‘Elyse’. He describes music as a ‘freewheeling kind of art form’ that gives him more freedom compared to acting, which he labels as ‘a discipline’.

The album, ‘Life Is a Dream’, is a reflection of Hopkins’ childhood memories and his developments in life. He says it’s about the ‘melancholy and sadness’ of life, and the ‘yearning’ that arises from it. The album’s first single, ‘1947: Suite for Solo Piano and Orchestra: II. Bracken Road’, is a part of a three-part suite about a particular summer in South Wales.

Hopkins has been reflecting on his life, and this album is a part of that reflection. He says he’s ‘without fear of mortality’ and is grateful to have lived this long. He’s had the opportunity to work with renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who describes Hopkins’ music as having ‘the same depth of imagination, humanity, and emotional truth’ as his work on stage and screen.
