Nebraska launches tuition‑free manufacturing credential program for 50 workers

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Labor, the Nebraska Chamber Foundation, local manufacturers and every community college in the state have teamed up to open the Nebraska Manufacturing Alliance Credential, a tuition‑free, six‑month apprenticeship aimed at strengthening the state’s manufacturing workforce.

The inaugural cohort includes 50 Nebraskans who will complete seven modules totaling 173 contact hours. In addition to the education component, each participant receives a stipend throughout the program, removing financial barriers and allowing them to focus on skill development.

Program goals and structure

The credential program is designed to address a widely reported shortage of mid‑level and advanced manufacturing talent. According to the Nebraska Chamber, 89% of participants say the program met their expectations, and 93% feel better prepared to enter manufacturing roles after completion.

Curriculum contributors, including Doug Rood, senior operations manager at Collins Aerospace, emphasized the need for workers who already possess a foundation of manufacturing skills. “The primary workforce challenge for employers is the shortage of available workers, especially individuals with mid‑level or advanced manufacturing skills,” Rood said. “Collins Aerospace in York currently has 14 open positions. While we can train and hire entry‑level candidates, there is a point at which employers need applicants with intermediate experience to reduce the training burden and accelerate productivity.”

Community and economic impact

By offering the program tuition‑free and providing stipends, the alliance hopes to attract a broader cross‑section of Nebraskans, including those who might otherwise be unable to afford further training. The partnership spans all community colleges, ensuring that students can remain close to home while gaining industry‑relevant credentials.

State officials view the initiative as a strategic investment in Nebraska’s economic future. A more skilled manufacturing workforce is expected to draw additional employers to the region, support existing companies, and help maintain the state’s reputation as a hub for high‑quality production.

Looking ahead

The first cohort is set to graduate after six months, at which point the program will be evaluated for expansion. If successful, the alliance plans to increase enrollment and potentially add new modules that reflect emerging technologies in the manufacturing sector.

Local businesses and industry leaders have expressed optimism that the credential will help close the gap between job openings and qualified applicants, fostering a more resilient and competitive Nebraska economy.
