National Safety Council warns Labor Day traffic deaths could rise to 434

As families prepare for end‑of‑summer trips, the National Safety Council (NSC) is sounding the alarm for Labor Day weekend. Using data from the National Highway Traffic Administration’s Analysis Reporting System, the NSC estimates that 434 people could be killed on U.S. roads during the holiday, a modest rise over the previous year’s projection.

Why Labor Day is especially risky

Labor Day consistently ranks among the deadliest U.S. holidays for road users. In 2024, it posted the highest average daily traffic deaths of any major holiday—149 deaths per day—according to the latest fatality data. Compared with ordinary weekends, the holiday sees more vehicles on the road and a higher share of impaired drivers.

Impaired driving remains a major factor

Ken Kolosh, statistics manager at the NSC, notes that warmer weather draws more travelers and more drivers who have been drinking. In 2024, 34% of Labor Day traffic deaths involved alcohol‑impaired driving, above the annual average of 30%.

Safety tips for a safer holiday

Kolosh offers practical steps to help reduce the risk:

  • Buckle up: Seat belts can save more than 100 lives.
  • Don’t drink and drive: Ensure a sober ride home for everyone.
  • Avoid speeding: Drive defensively and respect speed limits.
  • Stay focused: Eliminate distractions such as phones or multitasking.
  • Prepare your vehicle: Check that your car is ready for the trip before you hit the road.

By following these recommendations, travelers can help keep the Labor Day weekend a celebration rather than a tragedy.
