On Sunday morning, a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket roared from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying NASA’s newest observatory – the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. Dubbed a “discovery machine,” the bus‑size telescope is set to spend the next five years scanning the sky for objects that are invisible or too faint for existing telescopes.
Why the Roman Telescope matters
Unlike the Hubble Space Telescope, Roman can survey the sky more than 1,000 times faster, thanks to its wide‑field instrument that captures a view over 100 times larger than Hubble’s. This capability will allow scientists to create a three‑dimensional map of dark matter and to study dark energy – the mysterious force driving the accelerating expansion of the universe.

Technical highlights
After launch, Roman will take roughly three months to reach its operational orbit about 1 million miles (1.6 million kilometers) from Earth. Once there, it will undergo a commissioning phase, testing its instruments and deploying a large antenna to relay data back to ground stations.
The telescope is expected to transmit about one terabyte of data per day – the equivalent of streaming one million songs from a million miles away. All data will be made publicly available, giving astronomers worldwide the opportunity to mine the archive for new discoveries.

The observatory honors Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first chief of astronomy in the 1960s and the “mother of the Hubble Space Telescope.” Her vision for space‑based astronomy laid the groundwork for today’s fleet of orbital observatories.
“Every time we build a new space telescope, we add capabilities we didn’t have before and that adds to her legacy,” said Dr. Shawn Domagal‑Goldman, director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division.

Roman’s first images are slated for release in January, after which the telescope will begin its wide‑field surveys.
