The Naperville Municipal Band is currently in its summer season, performing every Thursday at 7:30PM in Central Park through August 12. One of the band’s dedicated members, a retired middle school math teacher and community college counselor, has been playing with the band for 23 years.
A Lifelong Love of Music
This member’s journey with music began in sixth grade when she was assigned to play the clarinet. Although she initially wanted to play the French horn, she grew to love the clarinet and played it throughout her school years. After a 26-year hiatus, she resumed playing with the Naperville Municipal Band.
When asked what drew her to the clarinet, she mentioned that she was initially assigned to play it, but grew to appreciate the instrument. She also shared that the most challenging part of playing again after so many years was regaining the facial muscles needed to produce a good sound.
She has kept playing all these years because she loves the results when multiple musicians come together to create a beautiful, intricate sound. She believes that music is a gift from God, allowing us to pray without words.
A Sense of Community
The Naperville Municipal Band has become a second family to her, and she appreciates the sense of community that comes with playing music together. She also plays woodwind quintet music with other band members and attends an adult band camp in Breckenridge, CO, every summer.
Her greatest musical mentor was her middle school band director, who made learning to play as a group fun. She also had a clarinet teacher who validated her playing ability at a significant moment when she played in the Illinois All State band.
What makes the Naperville Municipal Band special is the dedication and passion of its members, who show up for weekly rehearsals and give their best in many community concerts throughout the year. The band has many loyal fans who make the members feel appreciated and valued.
