Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, located at 3733 N. Southport Ave., will unveil a new 98-seat theater on June 26, marking the first time the venue will have three screens in its nearly 100-year history.
New Theater Features
The new theater will include a projection booth capable of showing both digital and 35mm films, stadium seating, and a back row of loveseats that can accommodate two guests at a time. The theater also offers accessibility devices for the hearing and vision impaired.
Regular Music Box patrons will find the design familiar: The color scheme, curtains, and carpeting were all inspired by the venue’s main 740-seat theater.
Renovations and Future Plans
To make room for the Music Box’s third screen, the theater converted two commercial storefronts just south of the venue. June 26 will also mark the reopening of the theater’s second screen after it was closed for renovations in early April.
The Music Box will continue renovations through 2026, adding improved lighting to its outdoor seating area and creating a permanent exhibit about the theater’s history.
At the end of the summer, the theater will introduce a new series, its first dedicated exclusively to children’s programming: ‘Indoor Kids: Family-Friendly Matinees.’
